Helping Stepfamiles Adjust

Jessica Lagos, LMFT

One of the most common family formations today is the stepfamily. This type of family typically faces unique sets of challenges as children adjust to new adults in their life. Biological parents and stepparents learn to navigate their relationships to each other and their children, and new routines and ways of doing things are developed. There can be periods of overwhelming stress and frustration, as well as good times connecting to and enjoying each other.  Remember that patience is important when forming a new stepfamily.  It can take a lot of time for those involved to adjust to their new way of life.

To learn more about stepfamilies, what to expect, things to consider, how to negotiate relationships with former spouses, and tips for helping kids cope with the adjustments, search “stepfamilies” in the Anthem EAP website search box to read the 3 part series “Stepping Stones for Stepfamilies” and “Stepfamilies: How to Help Your Child Adjust.”
