It’s time to shed some light on how to effectively navigate the healthcare system to ensure you get your behavioral health needs met. While there are many things outside of our control, here are a few things you can do when looking into obtaining care:
Spend some time researching appropriate providers. There are many providers out there - excellent ones - but they may not all be the best fit for you.
- Take some time to make a list of what you’re looking for in a provider –availability, experience, location, expertise. Providers should be willing to spend a couple of minutes on the phone answering some basic questions about how they work.
- Make a list of questions you want your provider to answer at your appointment. Feel free to bring a notepad and jot down things your provider suggests.
- Prevention! Prevention! Prevention! Don’t skip annual wellness exams and check-ups, even if you’re feeling better than ever. The best way to keep your out-of-pocket cost down is to be aware of your body and listen when it gives you a sign that something may be changing.
- Trust is vital in the consumer-provider relationship, and that takes time to build. Be as open and honest as you can with your provider so that she or he can prescribe the best course of action. Ask questions if you don’t understand or agree with something.
- Keep a list of your medications, dosages, and prescribers. Know what each medication is for, and be aware of side effects and drug interactions. Make sure your providers are aware of what you take and why – even if it’s an herbal or an over-the-counter supplement. *Extra tip: your pharmacist is an excellent resource for answering questions about medications too!
- Know your health insurance benefits! Providers will check your coverage, but ultimately it’s up to you to know what is and is not covered.
Empower yourself and stayinformed about making smart decisions with your health care. Go forth and be knowledgeable!
